Meet Jess:

Hello, I'm Jess - a Seafaring Trainee as part of National Historic Ships UK's SHTP2 (Shipshape Heritage Training Programme).

Hailing from the land-locked Midlands (UK) and having only stepped foot on a sailing vessel for the first time in 2018, seafaring may seem like an odd choice of career! But I have always been drawn to the sea and the romance of the Tall Ship heydays and after 10 years in the education and marketing sectors, it was time to turn my passion into a career.

In the last 12 months as part of the traineeship, I've travelled around the country meeting amazing people and exploring the fascinating projects they're working on, from Admiral Lord Nelson's HMS Victory (launched 1765) to Working Sail's replica Falmouth Pilot Cutter, Pellew (launched 2020). I've gained many qualifications and completed a bespoke 'Traditional Skills' course at the world-renowned Boatbuilding college: IBTC Lowestoft.

The SHTP2 project was set up in response to the traditional skills shortfall the maritime heritage sector is experiencing - as the older generation of seafarers and shipwrights retire or pass away, they take with them their knowledge to keep these old vessels alive. I knew going into the traineeship that I would have fantastic opportunities to learn some of these skills and gain qualifications but I didn't realise just how valuable some of the 'modern' skills I have could be for them; and it's within this two-way sharing of knowledge and ideas that I have found my calling and now more than ever I don't just want to sail these beautiful ships, I want dedicate my life to ensuring that there are always traditional sailing ships on the water for generations to come.
